Maximum Working Load Limits (WLL) on Sling Assemblies indicated in tonnes. Larger diameter wire rope assemblies are available on request
The working load limits of slings made from General Engineering ropes which are manufactured to BS EN 12385-4 should conform to the requirements of BS EN 13414-1: 2003. The Working Load Limits indicated are based on the assumption that soft eyes of single part slings are used over bearing points of not less than twice the diameter of the wire rope. All sling rope will be Ordinary Lay. All incorporated fittings will be compatable with and provide efficiencies equal to that specified within the table.
The Safe Working Load will normally be equal to the Working Load Limit, although in some instances it may be less e.g. if the sling is used in Choke Hitch the SWL will equal WLL x 0.8.
BS EN 13414-1: 2003 covers only those sling assemblies that have legs of equal nominal length, diameter, construction and tensile grade. Sling assemblies with legs of unequal length can be manufactured generally in accordance with this Standard, however their efficiency rating requires special consideration by a competent person.
In all cases where hooks and shackles are used, the WLL of these items shall not be less than that of the leg to which they are attached.
Safety Recommendations
When using multi-leg sling assemblies it must be remembered that as the angle between the legs increases, then the actual imposed load on the legs will also increase. Examine all slings before use and discard any that are defective in any way. Slings that are found to be unfit for purpose should be destroyed to eliminate the risk that they could be reused by a third party.Hooking back to the straight part of the rope is not recommended as this often leads to localised damage and distortions. The WLL of slings is influenced by the method of useage. Always check that the Crane hook is positioned over the Centre of Gravity of the load to be lifted which will prevent swinging when the load is raised. Correct signals in accordance with the recognised code of practice should be used to instruct the crane driver. The signals must be given by the person responsible for the lift and nobody else.
Keep wire rope slings away from Welding and flame cutting operations. The Law specifies that all lifting Equipment is examiined by a competent person at regular intervals, this includes wire rope slings.

The term ‘lifting equipment’ is applied to everything that is used to connect a load to a lifting appliance such as a Crane hook, e.g. wire rope slings, chain slings, textile slings etc.
Working Load Limit (WLL) is the maximum load lifting equipment is permitted to lift vertically, during normal lifting conditions.
Safe Working Load (SWL) is often the same as the WLL but shall be reduced as determined by a competent person given consideration of various factors applicable to a specific lifting operation/environment.
Breaking Load (BL) is the force required to break an item of lifting equipment during a destructive tensile test.
Coefficient of utilisation (safety factor) is the relationship between the breaking load and the working load limit.
Test force is the proof force to which an item of lifting equipment may be subjected to by the manufacturer prior to delivery.
Effective Working Length (EWL) is the length between the bearing points on an unloaded wire rope sling, chain sling or textile sling including the terminations if fitted.
Elongation to failure is represented by a lifting component’s total increase in length up to the point of complete failure, measured as a percentage of the original component’s original test length and provides an indication of the material’s toughness and ductility.
Reduction In Strength Due To BendingThe strength of steel wire rope is reduced by bending. The de-rating is related to the diameter of the bend, please see the diagram above (d = diameter of the steel rope)

(a) This equates with the maximum nominal diameter of rope. For intermediate nominal diameters of rope, use the next larger grip size.
When making the assembly and before bringing into service, the collar nuts should be tightened to the torque given in the table here.
The recommended tightening torques are for grips with greased surfaces and nut threads.
After load is applied for the first time torque should be checked again and if necessary, corrected.
The wire rope grips will be fitted as detailed below:
The distance between grips 'B' (see Figure A1) should be at least 1.5B and not more than 3B where B is the width of the bridge (see Figure A2).
When using a thimble in the eye assembly, the first wire rope grip should be placed immediately against the thimble. The bridge should always be placed on the load bearing part of the rope.
